There are some things that are certain in the world of video games, like yearly Call of Duty releases, GTA 6 will likely be the biggest game of all time, and that The Last of Us Part 3 is surely on the way.
While nothing is official yet, there have been plenty of rumbles that Naughty Dog is preparing to deliver a trilogy for the ages.
The Last of Us reinvented the zombie genre in 2013, and with its 2020 sequel leaving the door open for more adventures, was anyone really buying that we were going to leave Ellie strumming her guitar for all eternity?
Now, fans are conjuring up their own ‘dream’ storyline for where we could be heading next.

Over on Reddit, gamers are musing about their perfect storyline for The Last of Us Part 3. With Joel out of the picture, Abby and Ellie have somewhat put their differences aside, although there’s always room for more vengeance.
There are plenty of ways we could take the story, with fans previously pitching a story focusing on the character of Lev.
The introduction of Abby as the main antagonist of Part II and then making her the protagonist of the second half has split fans, with some saying they don’t want her back in Part 3. The top comment suggests Abby doesn’t return, adding, “The Last of Us is about Ellie, Abby only existed in part 2 to serve Ellie’s (and Joel’s) story, and they have now parted ways. They shouldn’t meet again.”
Someone else said, “I love Abby and I agree, there would be no purpose on seeing her in the game.” Another accepted that Abby likely will appear but said, “I don’t really like the idea of Ellie and Abby teaming up to fight a greater evil or working together towards a greater goal. I hope they remain enemies.”
One popular idea jumped further into the future and wants to see much older versions of these characters: “I hope its set many years later. Ellie and teenage JJ could be the main characters. That is unlikely though because they want to make a TV season about Part 3 without recasting.”
Someone concluded, “Let it be about redemption. Let it be about the union of the two worlds, Ellie and Abby. Not about creating an emotional bond of friendship between the two, but about both of them working together for the greater good.” Given that the first game was about love and the second about vengeance, the theme of redemption could work here.
There’s been a recent buzz around The Last of Us Part 3, with leaker DanielRPK (via Reddit) pointing to a casting call for an upcoming first-party PlayStation game.
This action-adventure game promises “intense violence and was looking for both a male and female lead. Although this is thought to be Naughty Dog’s new IP, there’s a chance we could be returning to The Last of Us.
A third game would also help extend the lifespan of HBO’s hit series of the same name.
Showrunner Craig Mazin has repeatedly said the show won’t extend beyond the source material – pencilling in four seasons as the magic number.
Still, we could be seeing Bella Ramsey in the role for a lot longer if we get a third game.
