Daryl Dixon Season 2 Continues A 12-Year Walking Dead Tradition That Will Never End

Summary

  • Daryl Dixon season 2’s trailer hints at more captures, maintaining a 12-year Walking Dead trend involving the protagonist.
  • Daryl’s trip to Europe in the spinoff brings new allies but also unexpected challenges from armed groups and glowing zombies.
  • The ongoing trend of Daryl constantly escaping captivity adds an entertaining yet slightly ludicrous aspect to his character’s journey.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon looks like it will continue a 12-year-old franchise tradition based on season 2’s trailer, which suggests the trend will never die. With the spinoff set to return in September, it will follow the protagonist’s journey in France as he helps fight off Genet and her army. While his trip to Europe was unplanned, Daryl found new allies abroad, making it unclear whether he will attempt to return to the United States in Daryl Dixon season 2. Therefore, Carol’s appearance in the next installment will only make his story even more complicated.

Although he spent most of the series trying to get home, Daryl Dixon season 1’s ending showed the character was conflicted about returning to the US, meaning Carol’s arrival will force him to make a huge decision. Unfortunately for the protagonist, his upcoming journey won’t be easy as he faces off against some critical threats. Having introduced new types of walkers in season 1, Daryl Dixon season 2’s trailer revealed a glowing zombie variant that Reedus’ character will need to overcome. However, this isn’t his biggest obstacle, as Genet’s group will help maintain a 12-year Walking Dead tradition involving Daryl.

Daryl Dixon Season 2 Continues Daryl’s Trend Of Getting Captured

Daryl’s 12-Year Streak Of Getting Captured Looks Set To Continue In His Spinoff’s Second Season

Daryl Dixon season 2’s trailer highlighted the titular character being captured and taken into a cell, which will continue a long-serving theme. Despite being one of The Walking Dead‘s strongest and craftiest survivors, Daryl will face trouble in season 2 as the spinoff’s trailer showcased a group of armed characters cornering him on a set of stairs. After surrendering, the teaser later reveals Daryl locked in some sort of cell, a position he is all too familiar with. Having already been captured multiple times in season 1, Daryl Dixon doesn’t look to be ending the character’s streak anytime soon.

Season 1 previously revealed how Daryl Dixon got to France in his Walking Dead spinoff, with the show explaining that he was captured and put on a boat before escaping and washing to shore. He was also captured in episode 2 by a group of kids who turned out to be friendly, and then again towards the end of the season by Genet before he escaped. With season 2 set to continue this 12-year trend, it seems like the spinoff has completely embraced Daryl’s history of being captured, meaning this trope may be associated with the character forever.

Daryl’s Ludicrous History Of Getting Captured In The Walking Dead Explained

Norman Reedus’ Character Has Been Captured More Than Anyone Else On The Show

Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon imprisoned with a bloody nose in The Walking Dead

While Daryl’s time in captivity may seem excessive in his spinoff, it is only the tip of the iceberg. Daryl has found himself captured more than any other Walking Dead character, and it has become an iconic part of his character. It first started back in season 3 when Daryl went to find Merle after learning he was alive, only to be grabbed by The Governor and forced to fight his own brother. While his time in Woodbury was his first taste of imprisonment, he would face plenty of similar experiences throughout his time in the apocalypse.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has officially been renewed for season 3.

Alongside his fellow survivors, Daryl was captured by the Terminus group in season 4, and The Saviors in season 6, both of which were very different experiences. While they had to fight out of Terminus, they were released by The Saviors, but Daryl would find himself imprisoned by the group down the line when he was made to work for them. In addition, The Claimers and The Reapers both kidnapped Daryl and forced him to join their group. Although he was given a sense of freedom in these factions, he wasn’t allowed to leave, making them predominantly hostile experiences.

Daryl was even captured by a group of children after accompanying Michonne to find Judith. She went missing during a flashback episode in season 9 where the duo went to look for her, only to be tricked by a group of children who were manipulated by Jocelyn – Michonne’s school friend. Despite Daryl Dixon’s history of being captured in The Walking Dead, he has survived every encounter and is clearly an escape expert, making these scenes all the more fun to watch, despite the lack of jeopardy.

Why Daryl Constantly Escaping Captivity Hasn’t Become Tiring Yet

Daryl Fighting Against The Odds Has Become An Endearing Part Of His Character

Daryl constantly escaping captivity should have become boring by now, yet it’s still entertaining since it’s a fun staple of the character. While it’s hard to get seriously invested in the danger of Daryl’s scenes while imprisoned, it can still be fun watching him escape and seeing what sort of chaos he causes in the process. Considering he is one of the franchise’s flagship characters, it is extremely unlikely for a villain to capture Daryl and simply execute him, but the thrill comes from seeing what sort of plan he and his allies put together to earn his freedom.

As long as Daryl Dixon can continue making these encounters interesting and unique, the spinoff continuing this ongoing trend should remain a fun yet slightly ludicrous aspect of Daryl’s character.

Season 2 already looks like it has given away the method of Daryl’s next escape, but it seems like he will leave a lot of bodies in the process, which should be exciting. Knowing he is almost guaranteed to be safe in each of these scenes may take away from the tension, but seeing some villains get outsmarted and potentially face serious consequences is a satisfying exchange. As long as Daryl Dixon can continue making these encounters interesting and unique, the spinoff continuing this ongoing trend should remain a fun yet slightly ludicrous aspect of Daryl’s character.
