The State of Hockey is keeping one of its own around for a long time.
On Monday, Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin announced the team has signed defenseman Brock Faber to an eight-year contract extension. The deal, which carries an AAV of $8.5 million, will begin with the 2025-26 season, and go through the 2032-33 campaign.
Faber is heading into the final year of his three-year, entry-level contract that he signed near the end of the 2022-23 campaign. It holds an AAV of $1.01 million, with Faber being eligible for up to $250,000 in performance bonuses for the 2024-25 season.
The Maple Grove, Minnesota native has quickly established himself as one of the top blueliners on the Wild, and one of the top prospects on the blueline. In his first full season in the NHL, Faber tallied eight goals and 39 assists for 47 points in 82 games. He finished tied for second in rookie scoring, trailing only Calder Trophy-winner Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks. Faber ended up being tied for first in rookie assists with Bedard, but led all freshman in time on ice. His 2047:53 of ice time was the most minutes played by a rookie since 2000-01. The 21-year-old averaged almost 25 minutes a game, and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
Over two seasons, Faber has played a total of 84 games in the NHL. He also appeared in all six of Minnesota’s games in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Faber came to the Wild after his rights were traded to Minnesota by the Los Angeles Kings, the team that took him in the second round, 45th overall, in the 2020 NHL Draft. He was part of the deal that sent Kevin Fiala to the Kings in June 2022.
The former U.S. National Team Development Program standout made a name for himself while at the University of Minnesota. He was on two fantastic Golden Gopher teams, making it all the way to the NCAA National Championship Game in 2023.
Faber also represented the United States at two IIHF World Junior Championships, helping the Americans take home gold at the 2021 World Juniors.
