New York Rangers News and Rumours on the Futures of Defencemen Lindgren and Trouba

Let’s recap some of the latest news and rumours regarding New York Rangers defencemen. With Braden Schneider, Matthew Robertson, and Chad Ruhwedel all signed, another order of business is Rangers’ defencemen Jacob Trouba and Ryan Lindgren. Yesterday Lindgren signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract. As for Trouba, a 2026 UFA, they will not likely trade him. But here’s what may be in store for them following the 2024-25 season.

Rangers News Regarding Defenceman Ryan Lindgren

The Rangers dodged arbitration with the defenceman. He has signed a new contract, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The 2024-25 campaign will be his seventh year as a Blueshirt. The Boston Bruins initially picked him in round two of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft but later traded him to the Rangers.

For right now, all that seems guaranteed for Lindgren is one more season, although that may change, according to Arthur Staple of The Athletic. He had previously written that either Lindgren or Trouba would not likely be going anywhere this summer.

But in 2025, they may have to part with either Rangers defencemen to free up cap space for contract renewals. The Rangers have a lot of work to do following the 2024-25 season. Igor Shesterkin, Alexis Lafreniere, and K’Andre Miller all need new contracts. None of those would be cheap. The elephant in the room would be Shesterkin, since Staple reported he will see an eight-figure salary upon a new contract. In addition, they are looking for a backup goalie and possibly a top-nine forward.

Lindgren started the 2019-20 campaign with the Hartford Wolf Pack but was very soon recalled and paired up with Adam Fox, also a rookie at the time. Ryan’s physical play combined well with Fox’s skating and puck-moving.

The blueliner notched 104 blocks, 113 hits, three goals and 14 assists in 76 games with the Blueshirts this past regular season. The Rangers defencemen Lindgren and Trouba sit on the first and second defensive pairings, and both contribute a lot to their team.

New York Rangers Rumours and Jacob Trouba

Jacob Trouba: Bio, Stats, News & More - The Hockey Writers

As for Trouba, the Blueshirts captain since 2022, Staple does not expect him to be traded or bought out this summer. He reported that a league source mentioned one recent conversation between Trouba and general manager Chris Drury.

“While there was surely some fence-mending on the team’s part for the rumours that were briefly out there, Trouba’s a pro and he knows how to handle situations for the good of the team without letting his own emotions get in the way; guessing that’s part of the reason they name you a captain in the first place,” Staple wrote

There were already rumours about Trouba before July 1st, but there was never expected to be a deal between the Detroit Red Wings and Rangers for the defenceman. He has a 15-team no trade list for the 2024-25 season and a 12-team one for 2025-26.

However, Staple reported that for summer 2025, the odds of a Trouba trade are higher. By then, he would be down to his contract’s last year and may draw more interest from trade partners, so “Things look tidier next summer for the Rangers and for Trouba.” Staple reported.

Trouba had excellent defensive numbers with the Blueshirts this past season. He notched 184 blocks and 191 hits in 69 games played.
