The Carolina Hurricanes, a big-time rival of the New York Rangers, re-signed forward Martin Necas to a two-year $13 million contract on Monday.

This comes after Necas filed for arbitration on July 5.

There was a lot of speculation that the Hurricanes would potentially trade Necas as the two sides were far apart throughout contract negotiations.

“There were a couple of deals that had been offered that were considered,” Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli said on the DFO Rundown. “That ultimately weren’t enough for the Carolina Hurricanes.”

While the Rangers stayed relatively quiet during the offseason and only really lost Barclay Goodrow, the Hurricanes were unable to retain some major pieces to their team including Jake Guentzel, Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce and Teuvo Teravainen.

Re-signing Necas is monumental for Carolina going into the 2024-25 in a tough Eastern Conference.

The 25-year-old forward is coming off a year where he recorded 24 goals, 29 assists and 53 points in 77 games.

It’s safe to say that the Rangers and Hurricanes are still the two best teams in the Metropolitan Division despite their respective offseason moves.

The Rangers defeated Carolina in the second round of the playoffs this past season in a hard-fought six-game series and we could easily see that matchup take place again next season.
