The Philadelphia Flyers’ current best player is going nowhere.
Announced by the team on Thursday afternoon, the Flyers have signed winger Travis Konecny to an eight-year, $70-million contract ($8.75-million AAV) that will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2032-33 season. Konecny was going to be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Konecny has led the Flyers in scoring for the past three seasons and has recently come off a campaign that saw him score 33 goals and 68 points in 76 games, which made it back-to-back seasons where the winger surpassed the 30-goal mark.
With his pending free agent status, it was technically uncertain whether the currently rebuilding Flyers would keep the 27-year-old around or trade him for future assets — but whenever the question was brought up to Flyers general manager Danny Briere, he remained adamant that he wanted Konecny to stay on this team beyond this upcoming season. And he said as much today.
“Travis Konecny is an integral part of the fabric of our team and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long-term,” said Briere via the team’s press release. “Travis has grown into a significant leader on our team and he truly embodies what it means to be a Flyer. His work-ethic, combined with his tenacity and talent makes him a central figure for what we are building towards, and his determination for our future success speaks volumes about his commitment to our team and city.”
Konecny will now be the Flyers’ highest-paid forward, surpassing captain Sean Couturier’s cap hit of $7.75-million by a clean million dollars. The former 24th-overall pick all the way back in 2015 is happy with the team now and ecstatic to stay with a team with the young talent they have.
“I couldn’t be happier to sign again with the Flyers,” said Konecny via the team’s press release. “There’s such a bright and exciting future with this team and I can’t wait to be a part of it for the next nine years and see what we will accomplish. I can’t thank all my teammates and staff members enough because this opportunity wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of them along the way. I can’t wait to get back to Philly in front of the best fans in the world and I look forward to another great season!”
According to The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz, there are some clauses attached to Konecny’s new deal.
The first six years of the contract, from the 2025-26 season through the 2030-31 season, has a full No-Move Clause; and the final two seasons have a partial No-Trade Clause. Therefore, at age 34 and 35, the Flyers could theoretically trade Konecny with limited restriction — that is of course, if the team is very bad at that point.
