Cardinals G Will Hernandez details how reshaped offensive line is adapting to new positions, roles

The Arizona Cardinals hosted an open practice on Thursday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale with fans watching them go through drills, giving their supporters a chance to witness what the team will look like heading into the 2024 NFL season.

One of those who has been hard at work to try and improve before his seventh year in the league and fourth as a Cardinal is guard Will Hernandez.

On the Arizona Sports radio show “Wolf and Luke,” Hernandez talked about various topics like how he traveled throughout the offseason and everywhere he went, he found opportunities to train.

Among the topics that were discussed, Hernandez is excited to work with a redeveloped offensive line that saw multiple additions to it in free agency. As of right now, players like Hernandez, Paris Johnson, Jonah Williams, Kelvin Beachum, Hjalte Froholdt, Evan Brown, Elijah Wilkinson, Dennis Daley, Trystan Colon and Keith Ismael will feature for the Cardinals on the O-line once the season begins.

When describing how Williams has fit in so far in particular since signing a two-year contract with the Cardinals, Hernandez praised him for how they have worked together and adapting seamlessly to the new systems in such a short amount of time.

“It’s great, he has also been in the league for a while,” Hernandez said. “That comes with experience, that comes with being able to stay calm under pressure. At the end of the day, one of the secret sauces of being a good offensive lineman is can you stay patient and how you work well with others? Staying patient, not freaking out about stuff. Sometimes if you do things a little too hard or try to do too much. Both of us have been in the league for a while, and we both show it by working well together right away.”

Because of the signing of Williams, 2023 first round draft pick Paris Johnson has shifted from right to left guard to make room for the new aqcustion. Coming into the NFL after playing at Ohio in college, Johnson Jr. has demonstrated that he can play either side of the offensive line.

Seeing that transition up close, Hernandez credited Johnson Jr. for how he has taken the new opportunity with the Cardinals and ran with it.

“He’s doing great, just as expected,” Hernandez said. “He’s doing his thing, making sure that anybody that he is paired up with, he helps them.”

The Cardinals are piecing together a vastly different roster from last year after they finished 4-13 in 2023. Running back DeeJay Dallas, linebacker Mack Wilson, defensive lineman Justin Jones, defensive tackle Bilal Nichols and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting will all look to help Arizona become a darkhorse in the NFC West while Antonio Hamilton, Marquise Brown and Rondale Moore all departed.

While it will take the new players some time to get used to each other, Hernandez believes that all of the Cardinals will adjust to others tendencies and it is just a matter of time until things start to all click.

“At the end of the day no matter what, no matter if you have all five coming back, there is always a period of adjustment,” Hernandez said. “Guys coming in, making sure the speed is back up, making sure people are thinking fast in the head as well with their footwork and body. It does make it easier when you have a guy like Jonah coming in who already knows what to do, he knows what is expected, he knows what it takes. We got leadership on the offensive line, Paris is one of the oldest rookies that I ever met in terms of mentality and how he handles himself. We have all those pieces together, we have to adjust to get on the same speed.”
