Former Capitals Defenseman Orlov Supports Kuznetsov, Believes He Could Still Play In NHL; Ex-Teammate Kovalchuk On Potential KHL Move

The ex-Capitals center is pondering next steps after terminating his NHL contract.

After playing in Russia’s “Match of the Year” between NHL and KHL stars, former Washington Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov took the time to speak on longtime teammate and friend Evgeny Kuznetsov, who terminated his NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes this past week.

Orlov said that nothing’s official when it comes to Kuznetsov’s next steps, as the 32-year-old is rumored to be signing a deal in the KHL. At the end of the day, though, Orlov said he supports his decision.

“So far, nothing’s official. He wrote, called, he’s still doing his business,” Orlov told MatchTV. “As a friend, I’ll accept any of his decisions.”

While Orlov, who played with Kuznetsov in Washington and Carolina following Kuznetsov’s trade to the Hurricanes in March, said that he supports Kuznetsov’s decision, he also believes he has the talent to stay and thrive in North America.

“I think he could still play in the NHL; he has enough skill,” Orlov added.

Ilya Kovalchuk, who played with Kuznetsov during his time with the Capitals in 2020, also commented on Kuznetsov’s transfer and believes that Russia will benefit from his addition if he signs overseas.

“New large stadiums are being built all over the country, where such personalities as Evgeny Kuznetsov will attract a huge number of spectators,” Kovalchuk told MatchTV. “That’s what the KHL wants.”

Kovalchuk also said that though rumors indicate that he’ll sign a four-year deal with SKA Saint Petersburg, Kuznetsov still has the time and ability to later play for his hometown team, Traktor, in Chelyabinsk.
