Bruins sign Michael Callahan, Alec Regula to one-year contracts

The Boston Bruins announced Friday the signings of defensemen Michael Callahan and Alec Regula to one-year, two-way contracts with NHL cap hits of $775,000.

The 24-year-old Callahan scored four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 70 games last season with the club’s AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. The 6-foot-2 blueliner has played 140 career AHL regular-season games, scoring six goals and 21 assists for 27 points.

Before turning pro, Callahan spent four seasons playing college hockey with the Providence Friars. Between 2018-19 and 2021-22, the Franklin, Mass. native scored 13 goals and 53 assists for 66 points in 138 games.

Taken by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Callahan spent parts of two seasons in the USHL, scoring three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 61 games with the Youngstown Phantoms, Central Illinois Flying Aces and Bloomington Thunder.

As for Regula, 23, he recorded four goals and 22 assists for 26 points in 55 games with Providence in 2023-24. The 6-foot-4 defender has played 163 career regular-season AHL games, scoring 16 goals and 61 assists for 77 points.

Before joining the Bruins’ organization last season, Regular, a West Bloomfield, Mich. native, spent three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, playing 22 games with the NHL club.

He also played over 100 games with the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. During his AHL career, Regula has 16 goals and 61 assists for 77 points in 163 career regular-season games with Rockford and Providence.

Before turning professional, Regula spent three seasons with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. He scored 45 goals and 79 assists for 124 points in 189 career regular-season OHL games. During his last season, Regula posted 27 goals and 33 assists for 60 points in 56 games before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
