The estranged couple first detailed their journey with couple’s counseling in season 13 of ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’
Nearly nine months after announcing their separation, Kyle Richards is giving fans an update on her current relationship with husband Mauricio Umansky.
During a joint Amazon Live session with her daughter Alexia Umansky on Monday, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 55, revealed that she and The Agency founder were no longer seeking counseling for their marriage.
“We’re just taking a break from that,” she said. “But we get along very well and we’re really good friends.”
In July 2023, a source told PEOPLE that the couple had been “separated for a while now” but remained “amicable as they figure out what’s next for them and their family.” Soon after the news of their separation went public, Richards and Umansky denied rumors they were getting divorced, but confessed to having a “rough year” in a statement shared to Instagram.
The pair first met in 1994 and married in January 1996. They share daughters Alexia, 27, Sophia, 24, and Portia, 16, as well as Richards’ eldest daughter Farrah Brittany, 35, (née Aldjufrie) from her first marriage to ex Guraish Aldjufrie.
On season 13 of RHOBH, the couple got candid about going to couple’s therapy and even confessed that the counseling has been a “great comfort.”
“I thought it was important to go to couple’s therapy because the more difficult things get between us, the more difficult it has been to communicate,” Richards told cameras before Umansky revealed that their sessions have been “fun” and allowed him to be “more in tune with myself.”
When his admission rubbed Richards the wrong way, he clarified, “All I’m saying is that this is helping us. I think we’re in a way better place.”
Umansky continued, “We’ve been married for 27 years. We’ve never had so much going on in our lives. I think it’s become hard. Right? It’s become really hard.”
Despite their best efforts, Richards revealed that problems in their marriage compounded over time and the separation she thought would be “temporary” had evolved during the final part of the RHOBH season 13 reunion.
“With any marriage, there’s issues that you have and they come up,” she said, explaining how their busy schedules with work and raising their children had pushed their problems aside rather than solve them. “Some of the issues never went away and they were never really like worked on.”
“I care about my family first and I mean I tried, I really did try,” she continued through tears. “And so then when I couldn’t, the kind of things I had been — don’t want to say put up with, but you know, just became more apparent to me I guess.”
“I guess I couldn’t do that anymore. I finally decided a breaking point but I really thought [our marriage] would come back,” Richards added. “I thought, ‘Okay this is just a temporary thing’ and it didn’t.”
