DeMar DeRozan Finishes as Runner-Up to Steph Curry for NBA Clutch Player of the Year

The NBA announced Thursday that Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry won the Jerry West Trophy, which goes to the league’s most clutch player. Chicago Bulls forward Demar DeRozan was a finalist for the award along with Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Curry became the award’s second-ever winner for his performances in clutch time, which the NBA defines as games within five points with five minutes or fewer remaining on the clock.

Curry finished with 45 first-place votes, 18 second-place votes, and 19 third-place votes for a total of 298 points. DeRozan had 34 firsts, 27 seconds, 21 thirds for 272 points.

No NBA player has scored more clutch points in the last two seasons than DeRozan, who also scored more points in overtime this season than anyone has since the 2006-07 season. His clutch ability was one of the bright spots in another middling Bulls season, but it seems Chicago won’t gain recognition until the team levels up and becomes a contender.

His teammate, Coby White , also finished runner-up for an NBA honor as Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey edged him out for the Most Improved Player award.

DeRozan’s contract status is one of the Bulls’ biggest questions entering the offseason. Chicago reportedly offered him a lucrative two-year deal, but the veteran is seeking a longer contract as he enters the next chapter of his storied career.
