The Rams don’t need to nail every selection, but it would help if they did

The Los Angeles Rams are preparing for the NFL Draft which is going to start on April 25th. Les Snead, Sean McVay and the rest will have their work cut out for them over the course of the next few days. One factor that should take some pressue off is that LA has a solid squad right now. They don’t necessarily need to hit on their first overall selection, or any specific pick to ensure they have a prosperous season.

Les Snead: Rams wanted to 'strategically target' DBs in 2022 NFL draft - Yahoo Sports

Obviously teams want to get every pick right, but that’s not realistic, and because of how the Rams drafted last season and the seasons before (and how they handled free agency this offseason) they might be set up to take a step forward even if they have a few misses. Imagine the worst player you think the Rams can draft in round one. Don’t you think LA can overcome with that with their other picks?

If last year was the most important draft in the Sean McVay era, then this draft might be the most exciting. The Rams made the playoffs in their previous campaign in what some considered a re-building year, and despite the loss of Aaron Donald, this team might be better than they were last April. The draft should only make the Rams stronger. We just saw LA find a top receiver in the league in the 5th round with Puka Nacua. LA may not find another top player like that this draft. They don’t need to. All they need to do is find enough players who will improve the team.

It’s well documented that LA has 11 picks right now, and that number could grow if the Rams trade down to aquire more picks. It could lessen if the Rams trade up. Either way the team will have a number of opportunities in these days ahead to make the organization stronger as they head towards September.

LA has cornerstone players on the team now that can allow the draft to fall to them. Is there truly a position that LA needs to target in any particular round?

Let’s see if Snead can work his magic and let’s go into this draft knowing the team might miss on some picks, including their first selection, and in no way does that have to derail what could still be a very successful and joy-filled season.
