As the offseason rolls along, teams’ rosters are taking shape. They are still a long way away from the final product, but we’re starting to get an idea of what the direction these teams are moving in. With so many notable free agents still available, some might ask what are the futures of these players? Will they move on to other teams, could they potentially go back to their last squad, or are their playing days simply over?
The NY Giants roster has had a big turnaround this offseason. With many old faces gone and new faces coming in, will we see any of the rest of their free agents reunite with the team or has the lack of contact with the players all but signaled the end of their time in East Rutherford? Let’s take a look at four free agents with Big Blue connections:
Jarrad Davis is a 29-year-old inside linebacker who first joined the Giants in 2022. He was brought in as a depth piece for the group, but ended up starting some games. He is mostly known for his downhill two-down thumper playing style. He had one big standout game against the Eagles two seasons ago that gave the fans hope that they might have found a solid rotational linebacker, but unfortunately the injury bug bit Davis hard as a knee injury forced him to miss the entire 2023 season.
The Giants have made upgrades to many positions except the linebacking core. Other than stud linebacker Bobby Okereke and young standout Micah McFadden, the position group is very thin. Sixth-round pick Darius Muasau, former undrafted free agent Dyontae Johnson, special teamers Carter Coughlin and Matthew Adams round out the group. Isaiah Simmons will be a hybrid player, but will be cast into many different roles on the team, leaving the inside linebacker group without quality depth.
The Giants need to sign a veteran linebacker with actual game experience. While there are still some veteran names out there like Zach Cunningham, Shaq Leonard, and Kwon Alexander, they might come at a higher cost. Davis could be a low-cost veteran move who knows the coaching staff. Don’t count Davis out from a Giants reunion this offseason should he be healthy.
