3 offensive players to watch in Titans’ preseason debut vs. 49ers

These three Tennessee Titans players should capture your attention on offense during the team’s 2024 preseason debut versus the San Francisco 49ers
Titans' Mail: WRs Early in the Draft, Treylon Burks' Future, Bill Callahan Expectations

The Tennessee Titans will officially debut their new-look offense versus the San Francisco 49ers in their first preseason game on Saturday evening. While they may take a “vanilla” approach, head coach Brian Callahan has consistently confirmed that the starters will play extensively throughout the preseason, including a “series or two” versus the 49ers. Franchise quarterback Will Levis will receive the start.

With DeAndre Hopkins sidelined with a knee injury, starting receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd should play briefly alongside Levis.

Regardless of how many series’ the offensive starters play, there are several talents worth watching closely. We’ve identified three Titans on offense that you should particularly monitor versus the 49ers.

Treylon Burks, WR

Treylon Burks reported to camp in the best physical shape of his life. It’s led to several impressive practices as a more aggressive and confident version of Burks has at times dominated one-versus-one reps. But it’s not the first time the former first-round receiver has impressed during the summer, so carrying those performances over to live-game reps should be a critical part of the evaluation.

Burks was demoted this offseason by the acquisitions of Boyd and Ridley, but the injury to Hopkins provides new opportunity. The ex Arkansas playmaker entered the summer tasked with maximizing the chances that come his way, and just one revealed itself. Burks should play early and often versus the 49ers.

Nicholas Petit-Frere, RT

Third-year offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere returned to practice from offseason surgery approximately one week ago. Petit-Frere underwent an offseason clean-up procedure on his knee. In his absence, blockers like John Ojuwku, Jaelyn Duncan, and Leroy Watson received first-team reps at right tackle with the offense. Watson won’t play on Saturday, as he’s been labeled week-to-week with an injury.

Petit-Frere is the perceived favorite to be the Week 1 starter, but he must quickly cover ground after missing the entire offseason workout program. Head coach Brian Callahan has already proclaimed that the right tackle battle won’t be settled until training camp and the preseason concludes. It’s unclear how much Petit-Frere will play versus the 49ers, but a positive showing would capture some much-needed momentum.

Malik Willis, QB

Malik Willis has enjoyed a quality training camp to date. The third-year quarterback was particularly outstanding during an open training camp session in July at Nissan Stadium in front of an electric home crowd. Willis has flashed signs of progress in previous areas of weakness, ones that include accuracy, decision making, and aggression.

Willis must continue displaying the same strides versus a live pass rush. Mason Rudolph is Tennessee’s backup quarterback. Callahan never kept three QBs in Cincinnati on the initial 53-man roster, so Willis faces an uphill battle. His goal is to make this an extremely difficult decision for Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon.
